Why Puppyhood Is Worth Remembering: Clare Noelle's First Photography Session
There is something wonderfully fleeting about puppyhood.
One day they're small enough to fit comfortably in your lap, clumsy enough to trip over their own paws, and curious about absolutely everything. Before you know it, those oversized paws have grown into them, the puppy fluff has disappeared, and the little habits that made you laugh have quietly become memories.
That's exactly why Kim reached out.
I first met Kim last year when I photographed her two dogs, Frankie and Andy. This time, she had welcomed an adorable Mini Aussiedoodle named Clare Noelle into the family and wanted to begin planning her portraits.
Originally, the plan was simple.
Wait until fall.
The colors would be beautiful, the weather would be perfect, and Clare would be a little older.
But after talking about just how quickly puppies change, we decided on something different.
Instead of waiting, we'd celebrate both chapters of Clare's first year with a puppy session now and another session this fall.
Looking back, I think it was the perfect decision.
Every Puppy Deserves to Be Remembered Exactly As They Are
At just 20 weeks old, Clare was exactly what every puppy should be.
Curious.
Playful.
A little unsure of the world around her.
And full of puppy jitters.
Like many young dogs, the beginning of our session wasn't about asking her to sit perfectly or pose for the camera. It was about giving her the time and space to explore, sniff, observe, and realize this was going to be a fun adventure.
Clare’s mom, Kim, did an amazing job reassuring her and offering lots of tasty treats throughout her session. Taking it as Clare’s speed especially when she was not so sure why we were asking her to sit inside the bushes! haha
As the session continued, something wonderful happened.
The nervous puppy slowly disappeared, replaced by a confident little girl who began looking toward the camera, offering adorable expressions, and happily exploring each new spot.
By the end of our time together, Clare wasn't just participating.
She was having fun.
Your Puppy Doesn't Need to Be Perfect
One of the biggest concerns I hear from new puppy parents is:
"I want to wait until they know how to sit."
Or...
"They're way too energetic for professional photos."
The truth is, I don't expect puppies to be perfect.
I expect them to be puppies.
That means taking breaks.
Celebrating the little victories.
Keeping the experience positive.
Working at their pace instead of mine.
Those playful moments, curious head tilts, and bursts of excitement aren't imperfections—they're part of your puppy's story.
My goal isn't to create a perfectly posed dog.
It's to create artwork that reminds you exactly who they were during this incredibly short season of life.
Why Waiting Isn't Always the Best Option
Puppyhood lasts for such a short time.
Their tiny faces change.
Their fluffy coats mature.
Their personalities grow.
And before long, your "little puppy" looks like the adult dog you'll know for years to come.
By choosing to photograph Clare now and again this fall, Kim isn't replacing one session with another.
She's preserving two completely different chapters of Clare's life.
Years from now, she'll be able to look back and remember not only what Clare looked like, but who she was during those first months of discovering the world.
Celebrating Every Stage
Watching families return as they welcome new pets is one of my favorite parts of being a pet photographer.
Seeing Frankie, Andy, and now Clare become part of the MJ Pawtography family is such an incredible honor.
Each session tells a different story.
Each season captures a different chapter.
And every one becomes a piece of a family's legacy.
If you've recently welcomed a puppy into your home, don't wait until they "grow into themselves."
This season is already worth remembering.
Because someday, those oversized paws, puppy eyes, and goofy expressions will be the memories you'll treasure most.

A Family Story, Beautifully Displayed
One of my favorite parts of this journey with Kim has been watching her family’s story unfold through photography.
Last year, Frankie and Andy stepped in front of my camera, creating beautiful portraits that captured their personalities and the bond they share with their family.
This year, Clare joined the story.
Not as a replacement for the dogs who came before her, but as the newest chapter in a family that continues to grow.
During her puppy session, we captured the tiny details that make this season so special—the curiosity, the sweetness, and the little moments that make Clare uniquely Clare.
Now, Kim has a beautiful collection of artwork featuring all three of her pups together in her home.
Three dogs.
Three personalities.
Three chapters of their family's story.
Every time she walks past these portraits, she won't just see beautiful images hanging on the wall. She'll be reminded of who they were in each season of their lives—the memories they've created, the love they share, and the joy these three dogs bring into her home every day.
This is why I believe pet photography is about so much more than taking pictures.
It is about preserving the feeling of a moment before it changes.
